THE MINDFUL CODE
The Mindful Code is an ethical framework inspired by secular Buddhism and Stoicism. The goal is to live a happy and peaceful life through wisdom, calm, and kindness.
Principles
Wise
Cultivate wisdom. Knowledge is the accumulation of facts; wisdom is the sound application of knowledge. Dedicate time each day to learning and use what you learn to help others. Question assumptions. Seek opposing views. Replace belief with evidence whenever truth reveals itself.
Manage expectations. Express gratitude. Focus on what you can control and influence, and release everything else. Accept reality as it is, knowing that all things change.
Calm
Develop calm, focus, and clarity through meditation. Spend time each day concentrating on a single object-your breath or a mantra. Repeat:
“Be wise, be calm, be kind.”
Pause before reacting. Think before speaking. Practice moderation and restraint. Behave ethically. Refrain from stealing and lying. Keep your promises.
Kind
Respect all life. Practice non-violence, compassion, and loving-kindness toward all living beings. Speak kindly and truthfully. Avoid gossip and harsh language. Earn a living honestly. Take responsibility for your actions and their consequences.
Before speaking or acting, ask:
“Is it wise? Is it calm? Is it kind?”
Surround yourself with people who support one another. Above all, be kind to everyone-including yourself.
